FutuStories - Tapio Tyynelä
Software Developer Tapio Tyynelä came to Futurice as a curious generalist and has taken the opportunity to grow into a confident specialist. This developer’s journey is all about growth, autonomy, and learning — plus trains and weight training!
What made you decide to join Futurice?
Before Futurice, I worked at a smaller consultancy where I got to wear many hats, partly out of interest, partly out of necessity. It was a great learning experience and gave me a solid micro-level understanding of software consulting. But being early in my career, I felt I needed a place where I could really focus and grow deeper in specific areas.
I wasn’t actively job-hunting, but I was open to interesting conversations. When Futurice reached out on LinkedIn, it sparked my interest. I already had a positive image of the company from my university days. I had filed it away in my head as a cool place with smart people.
What was your experience like during the recruitment process at Futurice?
The recruitment process only confirmed my image of the company. It started to feel like the right environment to take my skills to the next level and fully concentrate on the things I wanted to grow in. For me, that meant diving deeper into the technical side of things. And that’s exactly what I’ve been able to do: focus on the areas I’m passionate about and maintain the skills I care most about.
Have you been able to explore areas outside your core expertise while at Futurice?
One thing that’s definitely become even clearer over time is that although you can focus deeply on a specific skill set here, it doesn’t mean you’re boxed into a single mold. I’ve had the opportunity to do a variety of things outside my core technical work, like conducting interviews and participating in recruitment. That’s been both exciting and rewarding. It brings a nice balance to the day-to-day dev work. And I have no doubt that trying out new roles, even something like sales, would be just as possible here.
What can you tell us about your day-to-day work right now?
I’m part of the rare breed that comes to the office every day. There are no assigned desks, but I’ve definitely claimed an unofficial regular spot and marked it with my “personal brand”.
My day kicks off by checking for anything urgent, and if nothing’s on fire, I grab a coffee and a protein pudding and dive into development. Right now, I’m working on a really interesting and long-running project in railway logistics that will significantly improve the daily workflows of some railyard workers. It’s a great example of what I love about consulting—you get to explore how the world works in surprisingly niche areas. I now know more about train weighing than I ever thought I would.
I’ve been mainly focused on the frontend, especially UI work in React, but since we’re all pretty full-stack, I occasionally venture into backend territory too. Our process is lightweight—daily standups and a short weekly meeting, which leaves plenty of room for focused work and flexibility.
At some point during the day, there’s usually time for a bit of movement, maybe some hanging or pull-ups at the office’s pull-up station. That addition brought me a lot of joy, since fitness is something close to my heart.
What would you say to more senior professionals considering Futurice?
Even though my experience is rooted in the early stages of my career, I want to believe that this kind of workplace would be appealing to more senior professionals as well. The flexibility, the ability to shape your path, and the opportunity to try different things are qualities that I think anyone can appreciate.
